In the UAE, AI is everywhere and companies still carry the risk

In the UAE, artificial intelligence is no longer a pilot project. It is part of daily business. Companies use AI to analyse data, assess risk, automate customer service, and draft documents.

That shift is moving fast. The country is investing heavily in its digital future. Businesses are following the same path.

However, wider use also brings a harder reality. As opportunities grow, so does responsibility.

The biggest myth about AI accountability

Many people assume that if a system makes a decision, the system should carry the blame. In practice, it does not work that way.

An algorithm is not a legal person. It cannot be held accountable in court. It cannot pay damages. It cannot face sanctions.

Responsibility sits with the business that deploys the tool and relies on its output.

If AI recommends a loan, denies an insurance claim, or influences hiring, regulators tend to ask simple questions. What controls were in place? Who reviewed the model? Was there proper oversight?

Courts do not focus on how “smart” the software was. They focus on whether the company acted responsibly.

Automation is not intelligence

Another risk starts with language. Many firms call any digital workflow “AI”. That label can be misleading.

There is a real difference between automation and machine learning. Automation follows preset rules. It is usually predictable. Machine learning learns from data and can adapt its outputs over time. That makes outcomes harder to forecast.

This is where transparency becomes critical. If a customer is denied a service, the company must be able to explain why. With learning models, that explanation can be difficult. And that raises regulatory exposure.

Misclassifying a tool can sound harmless. In reality, it can affect contracts, insurance, risk reports, and how regulators view the business.

Data governance is not optional

AI does not work in a vacuum. It runs on data. Often, that data is personal.

That means businesses must know where data is stored and who can access it. They must also know when it is shared with third parties and on what terms. Consent matters too. Clients need to understand what processing they agreed to.

Cloud services do not remove liability. If data is mishandled, the company using the system remains responsible. The infrastructure provider may not be the party regulators pursue first.

Cross-border transfers are especially sensitive. Data moves easily across borders. Legal duties do not.

Investors now check governance, not just products

In early growth stages, legal work is often delayed. Start-ups prioritise product and scale.

Yet governance gaps tend to surface later, usually during fundraising. Investors are increasingly looking beyond features and growth charts. They want to see controls, clear policies, and defined responsibility.

A structured framework is not red tape. It is part of making growth sustainable. It also reduces surprises during due diligence.

Trust is the real currency of AI

AI is not only a technology story. It is a trust story.

Customers need to understand how decisions are made. Regulators need to see controlled processes. Investors need confidence that the business can withstand shocks.

AI can speed up operations. It does not remove obligations. What matters is not only what a system can do. What matters is who stands behind it, and whether they are ready to own its decisions.

Technology will keep moving. Responsibility has to move with it
