BMW recall in UAE: dealers contact owners, check your VIN
BMW has begun contacting customers in the UAE after a global recall linked to a potential fire risk in the engine starter. The company advises drivers not to leave vehicles running unattended, especially after using remote start. Repairs are being arranged through authorised dealers.
What BMW says and who is affected
Authorised partners in the UAE are calling customers to schedule repairs. Most jobs finish the same day, and loaner cars are available while work is done, according to BMW Group Middle East. Parts are in stock locally.
Globally, BMW expects a “mid-six-figure” number of cars to be covered. The issue stems from wear in the starter motor’s magnetic switch. That wear can lead to overheating and, in rare cases, a fire.
In the United States, 87,394 vehicles are included under a related NHTSA action. Dealers there will replace the starters at no cost.
BMW recall UAE: what to do now
Owners should check their vehicle identification number (VIN) on BMW’s recall page. A VIN is a unique 17-character code used to identify a specific vehicle. If the tool shows an open campaign, book a service slot with your dealer.
BMW also urges drivers not to leave cars running without supervision, particularly after remote start. Watch for signs of overheating such as smoke or a burning smell, and shut off the engine if noticed.
The technical fault, explained
The recall focuses on starters produced between July 2020 and July 2022. Excessive wear can affect the electromagnet inside the starter assembly. The starter motor is the unit that cranks the engine to begin combustion. Overheating in this component poses a fire risk.
According to BMW’s global guidance, dealers will replace the faulty starter. In some markets, batteries may also be replaced based on inspection.
Why this matters for UAE motorists
The UAE campaign is active. Dealers are proactively reaching out, and capacity has been prepared to handle same-day repairs in many cases. Prompt fixes reduce risk and restore normal operation. Customers who rely on remote start should be especially cautious until their cars are checked.
How to verify your car’s status
Use BMW’s online recall checker and enter your VIN. You can also call your dealer with the VIN for confirmation and to book the repair. In the US, BMW owners can check via BMW USA’s recall page as well. All safety recalls are free of charge.
The recall followed customer complaints and inspections that identified defective starters in certain vehicles. BMW has not disclosed the exact global total, but confirms a large number of units worldwide. UAE owners can expect direct outreach from dealers and should act once notified.
